Research

WP2 deals with the exercise of social citizenship in a multilevel system as a theoretical and policy challenge for the social sciences.

1. First,  EUROSHIP develops an original analytical framework for a comparative assessment of the gaps in scope for exercising social citizenship.  A key interest is how to conceptualise the interactions between citizens’ agency and structurally given constraints and opportunities: e.g. how citizens perceive and use their scope for action through networks and active agency, even in seemingly adverse circumstances, and in what ways individuals and households address risks of poverty and social exclusion over the life-course. 
2. Second, EUROSHIP provides an improved understanding of how intersectional inequalities influence gaps in social citizenship and implications for social protection policies. 
3. Third, EUROSHIP provides an improved understanding of the mechanisms behind the cross-national historical and institutional differences in how men and women with low education and income exercise and perceive social citizenship over the life-course, in the context of an increasingly globalised and digitalised economy.
