Tárki Social Research Institute is an employee owned institute, specialized in applied social research, with a history of more than thirty years. Based in Budapest, Hungary, its research focus spans from social stratification, labour markets, income distribution, consumption and lifestyle patterns to attitudes in Hungary and, in the majority of its projects, in Europe. An important stream of TARKI’s activities relates to survey methodology and developments of data collection technologies. TARKI is closely embedded in international collaborations with major European academic partners in various European research projects on comparative study of poverty and inequality. TÁRKI researchers are also integral parts of design and implementation of various international surveys. Most recently TARKI staff was invited (as a member of an international consortium) to design a separate a module on social justice for inclusion in the European Social Survey Wave 9 questionnaire. The majority of staff and of the broad intellectual network of TÁRKI have PhD’s with substantive and methodological interests and many hold professorial appointments at major Hungarian (and occasionally European) universities. István György Tóth

PhD in Sociology, Director of Tárki Social Research Institute, Budapest and Affiliated professor at Budapest Corvinus University. He directed and co-directed a number of comparative research projects on social structure and inequalities in Europe. He co-edits the bi-annual Social Report series analysing Hungarian social and economic trends since 1990 and co-authored “Cross-country evidence of the multiple drivers of inequality changes in the OECD area” (in Atkinson A. B and F. Bourguignon’s Handbook of income distribution by Elsevier). Together with Tamás Kolosi, he co-edits the bi-annual Social Report series analysing Hungarian social and economic trends since 1990.

András Gábos

PhD in sociology (Corvinus University of Budapest), is Senior Researcher at TÁRKI Social Research Institute (January 2000–present). His main research interests are in poverty, child poverty and well-being, income inequality, social policy analysis. He coordinated several projects in the field of child poverty, social policy evaluations for the Hungarian government and on monitoring the Hungarian Social Inclusion Strategy (2012,2014, 2018).He has participated inseveral European projects: CHER (FP5, 2000–2003); AHEAD (FP6, 2004–2007); AIM (FP6, 2005-2008); WORKCARE (FP6, 2006-2009), GINI(FP7, 2010-), ImPRovE (FP7, 2012-2015), InGRID (FP7, 2013-2016), STYLE(2013-2017), InGRID-2 (2017-2021)

Péter Szivós

Dr. Univ in Sociology, Managing Director and Senior Researcher at TÁRKI. He supervise day-to-day operation of TÁRKI and manage data collection activity. His research interest covers income inequalities and poverty and social policy evaluation. In the last decade he is also involved in a project aim at incorporate Hungary into the Europe-wide Tax-Benefit Microsimulation Model (EUROMOD), and took part great European projects like GINI, Improve and Reference Budget as researcher. Prior to TÁRKI, he worked for the Hungarian Central Statistical Office as senior officer/manager at Living Standard Statistics.

Anikó Bernát

MA in Sociology, PhD candidate in Sociology, both at ELTE University, Budapest) is a researcher at TARKI Social Research Institute since 2002. She has been specialized in areas related to the situation of vulnerable groups (e.g. the Roma, migrants and refugees, disabled people, homeless people), as well as various processes related to them, migration and social inclusion in particular. She has contributed to several EU projects (FP6: IDEA, FP7: ImPRoVE, InGRID, H2020:CEASEVAL, and also to DG projects) targeting various vulnerable groups. She has been the country expert for the FRANET (Fundamental Rights Agency) since 2014. Currently she is a working group co-leader in the COST Action ‘International Ethnic and Immigrant Minorities’ Survey Data Network’ (ETHMIGSURVEYDATA, CA16111) and leading the research project “Migration patterns and attitudes towards migratory movements: The case of Hungary, Poland, Lithuania and Bulgaria” funded by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (2018-2019). Besides, her main running projects are exploring the volunteer grassroots movement of migrant solidarity groups and the social and civic spects of the recent migration flow in Hungary (since 2015). Recently she led the evaluation of Asia-Europe Migration Project commissioned by the Asia-Europe Foundation (Singapore, 2016). She was the principal investigator of the project “The Rights of Roma Children and Women in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the FYROM and Serbia: A comparative review and further analysis of findings from MICS surveys in Roma settlements in the three countries” for UNICEF Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe (Geneva, 2012-2014); and has worked on the indicator development for monitoring and evaluation systems related to EU Structural Funds or the National Inclusion Strategy of Hungary (since 2013).

Zsófia Tomka

Zsófia Tomka has been working as a project assistant at TÁRKI since 2020. She did her Master’s studies in Nationalism Studies at the Central European University, as well as at the Freie Universität Berlin in the programme Sociology – European Societies. She earned her BA degree in Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Eötvös Loránd University. At TÁRKI, apart from the EUROSHIP project, she is participating in the research project InGRID-2 as well, also related to studying poverty and social exclusion in the EU.
